Any study starts with a curiosity and searches an answer to different questions. For this paper we were motivated by the topic ‘liability of foreignness’ (LOF) that can be an important obstacle for market expansion, business success and profitability in international market environments. We thought that working with some big data would reveal some facts about this issue and raised the following research question: „What is the relative position of the ‘liability of foreignness’ within the Academy of International Business (AIB) conference proceedings over a ten year period of scientific development?“

The literature survey of our study highlights first the growing importance attached to this concept over the last 20 years and discusses its importance within the framework of IB. The methodology is a bibliometric analysis of the big data based on conference papers. The analysis aims to present the link of the concept LOF to other concepts of importance over these years, hence reflects its relative position.
