Matters arising in the course of the financial crisis have meant that financial crimes – criminal activities in the world of finance – have increasingly moved into the public spotlight. Alongside the losses that can be measured in terms of money, there has also been at least as great a loss, which cannot be measured but is no less dramatic, resulting from the decrease in confidence that the business activities carried out by financial institutions will be fair and above board. But the collected pieces in “Financial Crimes – A Threat to Global Security” do not focus on the damage caused by economic crimes linked to financial institutions but on the associated challenge to the global financial system and hence to global security.
