Estland führte als erstes der drei baltischen Länder den Euro als Zahlungsmittel ein und vollzog so bereits am 1. Januar 2011 einen weiteren Schritt zur europäischen Integration. Eine zentrale Rolle beim Wohlergehen der Wirtschaft eines Landes spielt sein Bankensystem. Die Entwicklungen im estnischen Bankensystem nach der wiedererlangten Unabhängigkeit des Landes im Jahr 1990 stehen daher im Fokus dieses Beitrags. Er schließt zugleich eine Trilogie zu den Bankensystemen des Baltikums ab (ÖBA 4/2014 und 6/2015).

Estonia was the first of the Baltic states to introduce the euro as its national currency and in doing so, on 1 January 2011, undertook another step towards European integration. The banking system of a country plays a central role in its economic prosperity. For this reason, this paper focuses on developments in the Estonian banking system following the restoration of the country’s national independence in 1990. It marks the third and final paper of a series on the banking systems of the Baltic nations (ÖBA 4/2014 and 6/2015).
