Tax systems around the world have been struggling for decades to create a just and equal environment. A large percentage of taxpayers (normally the wealthiest) do not pay their fair share due to the way tax systems have been conceived, hence generating an unequal system. Even though tax and financial systems are our most powerful tools for creating a just society, some have managed to circumvent the system and benefit from its vulnerabilities at the cost of the most underprivileged, creating a significant gap in opportunities and growth.

Technology has driven human evolution and shaped globalisation. In that sense, blockchain technology should be of main relevance due to its potential to tackle most long-existing tax system issues. In this chapter, we will examine why blockchain is so relevant, its use cases in the tax realm and demonstrate the urgent necessity for the tax community to commit to further study the way in which we can use this exciting technology to our advantage in order to enhance tax justice and equality around the world.
